Achebe awarded coveted peace prize of the German Book Trade The Association of German Publishers and Booksellers has awarded the "Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels" (Peace Prize of the German Book Trade) to the Nigerian author Chinua Achebe. The 15,000 euro prize, entirely made up of donations from publishers and booksellers, represents the German book trade's commitment to the promotion of international understanding through its activities. The first prize was awarded in 1950. Former winners of the Peace Prize include Albert Schweitzer, Ernst Bloch, Max Frisch, Astrid Lindgren, Yehudi Menuhin, Vaclav Havel, and Mario Vargas Llosa. Achebe is the first African recipient of the award. The award ceremony will take place in Frankfurt on Sunday, 13 October 2002, during the Frankfurt Book Fair. Source: Frankfurt Book Fair 23/09/02
