New children's literature award in Ghana

Anno's Kite, a children's picture story book, written by Julie Campbell, illustrated by Eva Campbell and published by Woeli Publishing Services, won the 1997 Toyota/Children's Literature Foundation award for the most outstanding picture story book.

In an attempt to encourage the production of picture story books for children aged 3-12, Ghana's Children's Literature Foundation, a non-governmental organisation dedicated to the promotion of good literature for children, joined with Ghamot, the Toyota car agency in Ghana, to establish the award in February 1996. For this first award, entries were invited for picture story books published between 1990 and 1996. The award criteria included the art work, the balance between text and illustration and the overall design of the book.

The award is planned to run every two years.
